Are you prepared to be a YOYO (you’re on your own)? Below are some considerations for what if….
FOOD and WATER:
Many common hurricane preparedness tips prepare us for a short-term food shortage.
However, a longer-term view includes considering the following:
- Dedicate space to store food
- Consider shelf life, bulk, calories, preparation and cooking when purchasing
- Plan cooking methods including propane, charcoal and a smoker. Coleman style cookers use small propane cans. If you have a power source, use the most efficient appliance you have (crock pot, pressure cooker, etc.)
- Purchase a food sealer for extended shelf life. Date your food and rotate out as necessary.
- Explore garden, livestock, fishing and hunting options
- Learn how to can and what foods are nutrient rich and storage friendly
- For lessons that are closeby email a local prepper (here).
- Have plenty of water on hand or access to a well. Have a plan for powering the well pump.
POWER:
- Install solar panels, if possible, preferably with battery backup
- Generators and plenty of fuel
- Stock up on rechargeable batteries for small devices or small solar powered chargers
- Car batteries
- Purchase an electricity usage monitor to analyze ahead of time the most efficient cooking, heating (small space heater, electric blanket), fans and lighting methods
MEDICAL:
- Obtain basic first aid training
- Add to your standard home first aid kit with items such as tourniquets, stop bleed granules, wound packing, rehydration salts, splints, etc.
- Ask your doctor how to handle an interruption of your prescriptions and alternatives
PROTECTION:
- Learn your 2nd amendment rights as they pertain to SC
- Assess your property for security considering access to the grounds and structure. Consider impact resistant windows.
COMMUNICATION:
- Emergency Alert System Stations: WIWF 104.1 FM & WLFF 106.5 FM
- Learn about ham radio operation
COMMERCE:
- Keep cash in small bills on hand
- What skills or supplies do you have for barter?
BOOKS:
- “How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It” James Wesley, Rawles
- “The Encyclopedia of Country Living” Carla Emery
